Bird Proofing in Sydney
Pigeons and other birds roosting on ledges, sills, awnings and plant platforms leave droppings that stain façades, block gutters and drains, make walkways slippery and attract complaints from residents and tenants. On mid and high-rise buildings the problem areas are usually out of reach from the ground, which is why bird proofing is often left until it is bad. Ace Abseiling reaches those areas by rope access, cleans them and installs bird spikes so the birds have nowhere comfortable to land.
What we do
- Inspection and photos. We look at where birds are landing and roosting and photograph each area, so the building manager can see the scope before work starts.
- Cleaning droppings and nesting material. Ledges, sills, awnings and hard-to-reach façade areas are cleaned before anything is fixed, so the deterrent is fixed to a clean surface.
- Bird spikes. Installed along ledges, sills, parapets, signage and beams where birds land, fixed to suit the surface.
- Sealing gaps and entry points. Where birds are getting into cavities or behind cladding, gaps can be sealed as part of our caulking and sealing work.

Why rope access suits bird proofing
Bird problems are usually spread across many small areas at different heights: a row of window sills, the top of an awning, a ledge three floors up. Rope access lets a technician reach each spot directly from the roof without scaffolding or a large lift, with the area below managed while we work. It also means the same access can be used for other façade work in the same visit.
Combine it with other façade maintenance
Bird proofing works best when it is done at the same time as cleaning or repairs, because the ledges have to be cleaned anyway and the access is already set up. It is commonly combined with:
- pressure cleaning of stained façades and awnings;
- high-rise window cleaning;
- rope access painting, where spikes go on after the repaint;
- façade repairs, including concrete and crack repairs on the same ledges.
Before any rope access work starts, the roof anchors must be in date. If they are not, we can inspect and certify them first.
How a bird proofing job runs
- Photos or site visit. Send us photos of the problem areas, or we inspect the building.
- Written quote. The areas to be cleaned and proofed, and any other work worth doing from the same access.
- Cleaning. Droppings and nesting material removed from each area.
- Installation. Bird spikes fixed to the cleaned surfaces.
- Photos on completion. Before and after photos for the building manager or strata committee.
Frequently asked questions
Do bird spikes harm the birds?
No. Bird spikes are a deterrent, not a trap. They stop birds landing comfortably so they move on to somewhere else.
Why clean before installing spikes?
Droppings and nesting material are unhygienic and stop fixings from bonding properly. Cleaning first also removes the smell and marks that keep drawing birds back to the same spot.
Can bird proofing be done without scaffolding?
Usually yes. Our rope access technicians reach ledges, sills and awnings from the roof, so most buildings do not need scaffolding or a lift for this work.
Who pays for bird proofing in a strata building?
Ledges, façades and other common property are generally the owners corporation’s responsibility, usually arranged through the strata manager or building manager. Check your strata plan for balconies and other lot property.
Which areas do you cover?
Greater Sydney, Wollongong and the Central Coast.
